‘Porto wrecked my Premiership dream’
By European Football September 5 2005
With Blackburn, Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham and Aston Villa all interested in his signature, South African striker Benni McCarthy, had a right to assume he had a good possibility of a move to the Premiership.
In fact it seems to have very nearly happened with McCarthy claiming, he had gone as far as passing a medical with West Ham, before Porto pulled to plug on any such move.

In an interview with the Sunday Times of Johannesburg McCarthy is obviously annoyed with the situation:

"I passed the medical test and I was sure I was signing for West Ham.

"You can imagine my frustrations when told at the last minute that the deal was off.

"I have served the club well and I thought they would finally release me.

"Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers have shown huge interest in me and I don't know why the club won't release me.

"But I can't change what has happened and I will just have to play for them until my contract with them ends.

"I have two more years with Porto, but I don't think I will be with them for that long.

"Maybe something will materialise when the window period opens again in January."

"Never mind the setback, I am an African and strong. I will go back to Porto and help the club to achieve more."
