Their was an early shock in the 1980 season with West Indies coming away from New Zealand with 1-0 series defeat after a narrow 1 wicket defeat in the first test. West Indies without the injured Richards and Roberts made New Zealand struggle to victory chasing 105 to win. Richard Hadlee was the hero for the Kiwis with 11 wickets in the match and a crucial fifty aswell.

That was to be the only blip for the West Indies in the 1980's and they continued from where they left off in the mid to late 1970's, winning all their remaining series with the exception of a drawn series in Australia, which finished 1-1.

The 1980's is a period which will go down in history for the rebel tours to South Africa from teams in England and Australia. With Apartheid high on the agenda, England's tour of the Westindies in 1980 included the famous 2nd Test Match being cancelled due to the Guyanese government revoking the visa of Robin Jackman due to him having played and coached in South Africa during the previous 11 years.

On the Pitch England were convincingly defeated with an Innings victories and another 300 runs defeat, with Lloyds and Richards averaging 70+ and Croft and Holding picking up 24 and 17 wickets apiece. Things were going to get much worse for the Englishmen with 5-0 black wash at home in 1984.

Grenidge and Gomes piled up the runs with series averages of 80, on the bowling front it was the turn of giant Joel Garner and the young and skiddy Malcolm Marshall to give England nightmares with 29 and 24 wickets a piece in the series.

Pakistan were one of the few teams to compete with the West Indies and lost 1-0 in the only series they played against them in 1980-84 period.
Imran was the hero in the first test with the bat this time, scoring a magnifient 123 against Garner, Croft, Marshall and Clarke. With no play possible on the 3rd day the game ended in a draw.

With a weak batting line up containing only Zaheer, Miandad and Majid Khan Pakistan crumbled in the 2nd Test failing to score 200 runs in either innings. The bowlers led by the spinners Iqbal Qasim and Mohammed Nazir did well to dismiss the Windies cheaply, but the batsmen failed to capitilise and Pakistan lost by 156 runs.

No play was possible on the 1st day of the 3rd Test, but Pakistan salvaged some pride bowling out the Westindies for 169 with Iqbal Qasim oppening the attack with Imran Khan and and picking up 8 wickets between them. Pakistan again struggled with the bat and were happy to leave with a draw.

The 4th Test followed a similar pattern with Imran Khan taking 5 wickets but the batsmen failing to capitilise and failing to score 200 runs.

The following year Pakistan lost heavily to Australia in the oppening two tests. Pakistan bowled out Australia for 180 with Imran taking 4 wickets only to see Pakistan batsmen once again give it away with a pathetic score of 62 Allout. Only Safraz Nawaz getting into double figures with 26 runs on the bouncy WACA pitch. Lillee and Alderman taking 9 of the wickets to fall.
Pakistan did much better in the 2nd innings scoring 254 but it was not enough.
24 years later our new generation of batsmen are about to face the same Perth pitch...

Pakistan batting improved in the second test scoring 290 runs in the 1st innings, only to see Australia rack up 512 runs with Chappel scoring a double century and giving Australia a 10 wicket win.

Having been defeated heavily in the first two tests Pakistan suprised all the pundits with a virtuoso performance and a stunning Innings victory. For once it was not based on an individual performance but through a team effort with 7 players helping Pakistan score 500 runs and everybody chipping in with 3 wickets. In fact the man of the match went to an Australian Bruce Yardly for his 7 wickets for 187 runs!!!.

Maybe history will repeat it self and the current Pakistan team will pull a suprise in the last test match.

Zaheer and Imran were the heros for Pakistan averaging 56 with the bat and with 16 wickets.

Pakistan quickly regained revenge for the series loss, when the Asutralians toured in 1982 for the return series. Pakistan winning 3-0 with all the batsmen scoring runs: Zaheer, Mohsin and Muddasser leading the way. Imran Khan and Qadir were the leading wicket takers with 13 and 22 wickets in the series.

Pakistan also defeated India by the same 3-0 scorline in a 6 match test series in 1982.
Imran Khan bowling out India with figures of 3-19 and 8-60 and in the 2nd Test, Zaheer and Muddasser scoring centuries to ensure an innings victory.

Things got even better in the 3rd test with 4 Pakistani batsmen scoring a century: Zaheer, Miandad, Malik and Imran Khan. Imran went on to take 6-98 and 6-84 for another 10 wicket haul.

In the 4th Test Pakistan reached their peak and scored a massive 581 for loss of only 3 wickets with Miandad scoring the famous 280* and Muddasser also scoring a double century. Imran Khan declared the innings and set about destroying the Indian once again with astonishing figures of 6-35 from 17 overs on a placid surface. Safraz with 7 wickets in the match helping Pakistan to another innings victory.

Imran finished the series with 40 wickets at ~13 runs per wicket and a strike rate of 33. Zaheer, Muddasser and Miandad avering ~120 for the series with 650, 721 and 594 runs respectively. Imran also averaging 61 with the bat with 250 runs.

In the return Pakistan drew 0-0 with India in an un-eventfull series. Paksitan were without key bowlers Imran, Safraz and Qadir.

Pakistan went on to win series against England and New Zealand at home.

New Zealand were the other form team in the early 1980's with victories against India, England, SriLanka and a drawn series against Australia along with series victory over West Indies.

Richard Hadlee was their leading player with 128 wickets @ ~19 with a strike rate of ~50, Taking 12 five wicket hauls in the 5 year period. Only John Reid averaged over 40 for the Kiwis, run making was no problem for the West Indies with Lloyd, Grenidge, Richards, Haynes and Gomes all scoring over 2000 runs and averaging ~50 backed up by wicketkeeper Dujon who averaged an impressive 45.

On the bowling front the 4 pacemen were causing havoc to batsmen all around the world with Garner, Marshall and Holding taking 150+ wickets @ 21 runs a piece. Croft and Roberts backed them up with 150 wickets between the two of them.

For Pakistan it was Miandad who scored more runs than anyone in world cricket including Viv Richards by 3 runs after scoring 2847 runs. Zaheer, Mudasser, Mohsin all also scored over 2000 runs aswell and all averaged over 45. Imran was becoming a solid and reliable batsmen for Pakistan down the order and averaged 42 with over 1000 runs including 2 tons.

Imran again led the way on the bowling front with 134 wickets costing less than 16.5 runs per wicket every 42 balls. The spinners Iqbal Qasim and Abdul Qadir provided the supporting role with 90 wickets each, but Safraz Nawaz was fading and only picked up 57 wickets with a poor strike rate of 90 balls.

West Indies continued to dominate in the mid 1980's and England were again at the end of a 5-0 black wash with Garner and Marshall taking 27 wickets each in the series at 15 runs a piece. Haynes, Richards and Richardson scoring the bulk of the runs and averaging in the 60-70 range.

Pakistan were Westindies main challengers once again and gained 1-1 series draws at home and in the carabeen from 1986-1988. Pakistan had found a new fast bowler Wasim Akram and he was about to show the world his 10 wicket haul in his 2nd Test match against New Zealand was no fluke. Pakistan did not win that particular Test but Wasim bowling alongside Imran was to cause havoc to the WestIndies.

Pakistan started of badly in the 1st innings and were dismissed for 159 with Imran making 61. Wasim was unleashed and took 6-90 and helped contain the Westindies to 248. He wasn't finished their and showed his allround potential with a quick fire 66 along with Salim Yousaf 61 helping set a 230 runs Target. That proved to be plenty as Imran (4-40) and Qadir (6-16) bowled Westindies for a record low score of 53 in 25 Overs !!!.

Pakistan again struggled with the bat in the 2nd Test and were dismissed for 130 with Marshall and Walsh sharing 8 wickets. Pakistan's chances were dealt a severe blow with the injury to Wasim
which was to rule him out of the rest of the series after 9 overs. Imran was the only remaining fast bowler and although he took another 5 wickets Westindies managed to get over 200 runs. Pakistan again capitulated in the 2nd innings for 77 allout.

Pakistan fought hard in the 3rd Test to gain a draw, with Saleem Jaffer and Muddasser supporting Imran, Pakistan restricted WestIndies to 240 and came within one run of that themselves, with Miandad making a fifty. Imran (6-46) and Qadir (3-84) bowled out the WestIndies for 211. Pakistan collapsed to 95-7 with nearly a session to go, but Imran with the help of Tauseef Ahmed held out for well earned 1-1 series draw.

In the Carabeen it was a similar tale, with Pakistan taking the iniative and winning the 1st Test Comfortbly with a 9 wicket win. Imran taking 7-80 and dismissing the WestIndies for 293, Miandad with his highest score against the Westindies of 114 helped to get the score over 400. The rest was left to Imran and Qadir who helped themselves to 7 wicket, Imran finishing with 11-120 in the match.

The 2nd Test turned out to be a classic and neither team was quite able to force a victory, with Pakistan an falling an agonising 30 runs short of a record 370 run target and ending up on 341-9 with Miandad scoring his last century against the Westindies. Ijaz Faqih and Abdul Qadir the last men at the wicket holding out for a draw. Earlier in the match it was the Imran and Qadir show again as they took 17 wickets in the match but the Pakistani batsmen failed to capitilize once again.

The 3rd Test was another epic battle, consistent batting from all the batsmen helped Pakistan to 308, WestIndies were dismissed for 306 with Imran, Wasim and Qadir sharing the wickets.
Pakistan struggled with the bat the second time around and left them chasing 268, Pakistan were to lose their talisman and captain Imran after 6 overs and Wasim and Qadir performed heroics to reduce Westindies to 207-8. The Westindies scrambled home with the help of some contencious decisions by the umpires and an unbeaten 40 from Winston Benjamin batting at 10, with lastman Walsh waiting in the pavilion.

West Indies returned to their winning ways after this tough series with big wins over England (4-0), Australia (3-1) and India (3-0) but their were signs for concern with retirements of key players. The new generation of batsmen and fast bowlers were not in the same class as the old.
Haynes, Grendige, Richards and Richardson scored heavily over 2000 runs once again but averaging over 40's rather than the 50's seen in the past. Squad players like Logie averaging in low 30's.

The bowling was led by Marshall with 165 wickets at 18 and Walsh 109, with Ambrose and Patterson giving good support with 60 wickets each.

Pakistan batting was also starting to look fragile with retirements and heavily depended on Miandad who scored over 2795 runs at 58 once again scoring more runs than any of the WestIndians.
Shoaib Mohammed and Imran were the only other batsmen to provide real support to Miandad and scored over 1000 runs averaging in the mid 40's. The likes of Salim Malik, Ramiz Raja, Muddasser all struggled to live upto expectation and averaged in the low 30's and were one of the main reasons why Pakistan failed to tople Westindies and gain the crown of the best team in the world, despite all the bowling efforts of Imran and Qadir.

Imran taking 122 wickets at 22 runs apiece, closely followed by Qadir with 118 wicket at 31. Wasim Akram making an immediate impact and taking 94 wickets at 28 and a strike rate of 66 in his first 4 seasons as a top flight cricketer.

Meanwhile in the Ashes battle England continued to defeat the Australians in the early part of the period with the 3G's dominating the Australian bowlers. Gower (732), Gatting and Gooch all helping themselves to 500 runs in the series with averages close to 80. Botham (31 wickets at 27) and the spin twins Embury and Edmunson putting the Australians in a spin.

Gatting would be the last England captain to win the Ashes in 1986 as Australia was about to undergo a transformation under the leadership of Allan Border. It all started in 1989 with Australia asked to bat piling up 600 runs at Headingly with Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh scoring big hundreds. England would be sick of the site of these two in the next decade...

Terry Alderman was to prove to be Englands nemesis and Graham Gooch's in particular. "Gooch lbw b Alderman" was to become a familar on scorecards on all the test venues around the country as Alderman finished with 41 wickets in the series at 17. He was ably supported by Geoff Lawson with 29 wickets in the series.

M.Taylor ended up with a record 839 runs in the series with S.Waugh and D.Jones both scoring 500 runs with the help of 2 tons each.
